When high school students take a summer day to visit a college campus like Purdue University, they typically spend it tagging along with their parents, touring buildings and dorms, and chatting with academic and financial aid advisors. For 25 students from Pike High School in Indianapolis, here to learn more about Purdue’s Horticulture and Landscape Architecture Department, their campus tour was anything but typical.
They fed fish as part of a working aquaponics research project, designed a lakefront park, learned about the economics of farmer's markets, and explored the science of plant chemistry. Okay, there were tours of a dormitory, food court, and the Purdue Horticulture greenhouses. But students also learned about the new Purdue Student Farm and the turf management major. They even finished their day on campus trying their hand at test driving a pair of self-propelled fertilizer spreaders at the William H. Daniel Turf Grass Center-- a typically wonderful day learning about Purdue Horticulture and Landscape opportunities.
